Many women don't give themselves enough credit, and Vonn notably patted herself on the back even as she conceded that this wasn't her peak performance.

So, then, there they were as the sun settled behind the clouds, the temperature dipped and the last individual Alpine race of the Pyeongchang Games concluded.

Holdener, who was almost three seconds down on Vonn after the downhill, skied into the gold medal position on her slalom descent.

Shiffrin, who won the giant slalom gold in Pyeongchang but could only finish fourth in her favoured slalom, was nearly a second back, while another Swiss racer, Wendy Holdener, claimed bronze.

JEONGSEON, South Korea (AP) - Michelle Gisin of Switzerland won the women's Olympic Alpine combined on Thursday with an aggressive slalom run to beat Mikaela Shiffrin.

Vonn crashed heavily in the Super-G and needed to be airlifted to hospital. She is, going forward, the face of the US ski team, and the way she embraced that silver means she and the American program have reason to celebrate. She said she's "enjoying the last remaining days of the Olympics" with her family.

"It's unbelievable to be on the podium for the second time in these Olympics", said Holdener, who won silver in the slalom on 16 February.

With the silver, Shiffrin became the fourth American to win at least three Olympic Alpine ski medals. It was a big comeback for the racer, who throughout the years has suffered multiple injuries in 2012 and 2013 and didn't compete at the Sochi Games four years ago.

In getting to the podium, Shiffrin matches Vonn with three career Olympic medals in alpine skiing.

Vonn (bronze) and Mowinckel (silver) both made the podium in the women's downhill on Wednesday behind gold-medal victor Sofia Goggia, who did not take part in the combined with a team spokesperson saying the Italian had not slept well. "You're not going to be able to win as consistently as you did, you're not going to be able to win as many tournaments or ski races". Glancing to Sofia Goggia, she wagged her finger in jest - part accepting that she had been vanquished by the faster woman, part understanding that her chance of the second downhill gold that could do justice to her great career had passed.
