Google has turned on a processor in its phones, allowing users to take pictures within messaging apps which are the same HDR+ quality as those captured in the main camera.
The technology essentially uses Google's computational photography and machine learning to improve photo quality. This means it'll be easier to shoot and share fantastic photos on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Snapchat, along with many other apps which use the Pixel 2 camera.

The update that enables Pixel Visual Core is now being rolled out over-the-air and it's going to go live in all regions over the next few days. "That means we're able to use that additional computing power to improve the quality of your pictures by running the HDR+ algorithm", Google says. This is because the search giant has activated Pixel Visual Core, a custom-made image processing tech in the handset for third-party apps. You're essentially getting low-level access to the camera hardware. According to Google, Pixel Visual Core is designed for processing images quickly with greater muscle power but cutting down on battery consumption. In other words, Visual Core seems a lot like an experiment for the future. The Visual Core was dormant when these Pixels came out, however, it was enabled with the Android 8.1 Oreo update last December.

Another cited benefit is zero shutter lag between pressing the shutter and capturing the picture. Pixel Visual Core can now make images taken in those third-party apps brighter, more detailed, and clearer.
