Charter bus carrying plunges into Alabama ravine; injuries reported

According to district officials, the students were out of state for a school trip to Disney World in Florida, when the bus carrying the band instruments and a small portion of students crashed.

A tour bus carrying students returning to Houston from a school trip plunged into a ravine off an interstate in Alabama.

Those who were injured were taken to hospitals in Alabama and Florida.

"Everybody is being transferred to a hospital to at least be checked out", Elliott said.

According to WKRG-TV, a deputy suffered minor injuries while pulling people from the bus. The station reported that 52 people are on board the bus.

The interstate was closed down in both directions after the crash.

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that eastbound traffic on I-10 was being diverted at Exit 44. First responders had to rappel into the 50-foot ravine to make rescues, the Houston Chronicle reported.

"This bus was following and they sent some parents that were on that bus to help out as well as staff members", said Ollis.

Witnesses said the bus was transporting students and chaperones from Channelview High School, just east of Houston.

Authorities confirmed the driver had died, while one person was in a critical condition and at least five others were seriously injured.

Only hours before the crash, the band's Facebook page had been updated to show a large group posing outside Disney World, where the band performed at a music festival Saturday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott offered his condolences to those affected by the crash, saying in a statement: "I pray for a speedy recovery for all those injured, and I am especially grateful for the heroic actions of the Alabama first responders that undoubtedly helped save lives today".
