The Lenin statue which stood in Tripura's extreme south at the centre of the College Square from last five years was knockdown on Monday, at 2.20 pm, just after 48 hours of the assembly results were announced, celebrating BJP's victory in the state.

Hundreds of Left activists on Tuesday poured out on the streets of Kolkata to protest against the demolition of a statue of Vladimir Lenin in Tripura after the BJP won the assembly elections in the northeastern state.

"People of the area wanted to erect statues of national heroes like Swami Vivekananda, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Mother Teresa instead of Lenin since long". His biggest achievement though was carrying out a door-to-door campaign to project BJP as a viable alternative to CPM - a party that has dominated Tripura for 25 years.

Statues of Communist icons like Lenin, the Russian revolutionary leader, Mao, the Chinese revolutionary, and Marx, the German revolutionary socialist, were installed in states like West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura, where the Left was in power.

A JCB was used to bring down the statue. It was built by the municipality and funded by the taxpayers' money. While CPM described the incident an example of "Communism phobia", BJP claimed that the statue was brought down by people "oppressed" by the Left.

Furthermore, justifying the act of his party workers BJP south district secretary Raju Nath said that the statute fell because of an "overflow of anger".

Reportedly, BJP workers have attacked CPM offices in Agartala and demolished a Lenin statue in Belonia.

He even went to the length of saying that he later made another tweet in which he stated pulling down of Lenin's statue was an offence for which there are penal provisions. The statue would be handed over to the authorities of Belonia Municipal Corporation today, the SP said.

Democrats outnumber Republicans in early voting
Texas voters have already set a record for a non-presidential year during the early voting period, with over 700,000 ballots cast. That would be troubling news for the Cruz campaign, which is trailing O'Rourke in fundraising by $1.5 million as of mid-February.

Data collected by CPI (M) said 1,539 houses were damaged, 196 set on fire while 134 party offices were vandalised.

Dhar alleged around 520 CPI-M supporters were injured in attacks by rival BJP-IPFT party workers in more than 225 places across Tripura since Saturday, after the declaration of the poll results.

Surendran added that the people who are now behaving as if they are doves of peace have killed more than a dozen BJP members in Tripura alone in the past two years.
