The comments by Bob Corker (Republican-Tennessee), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in a television interview broadcast March 18 came less than two months before Trump must decide whether to extend USA sanctions relief to Tehran under the landmark deal.

France, Germany and the United Kingdom have proposed new sanctions targeting Iran in an apparent attempt to keep the U.S. within the 2015 nuclear agreement with Tehran.

One European diplomat said representatives from Europe were desperate to save the JCPOA from a possible collapse, which could be a case due to policies adopted by US President Donald Trump.

"Now he has a secretary of state who 100% shares his views on the nature and gravity of the Iranian threat and the fatal flaws of the JCPOA", Dubowitz said in an interview, using the initialism for the deal's official name.

Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) entered yesterday an intensive care unit amid talks in Vienna and Berlin, a planned European Union move, and expected high-level consultations in the upcoming two months, before US President Donald Trump announces his final decision on the nuclear deal.

Countryman told VOA he is concerned about the shake-up at the State Department, because he believes Tillerson has good instincts on foreign policy and was a moderating influence on Trump. "It may well be the first casualty of Tillerson's ousting will be the end of the Iran deal".

Trump recently chose to extend a waiver on nuclear sanctions that were imposed on Iran but made clear it would be the last time he will do so and ordered European allies and Congress to work with him to fix "the disastrous flaws" in the 2015 deal or Washington would withdraw.

The commission overseeing the nuclear accord said on Friday in Vienna that Iran was meeting its obligations under the deal.

Trump has said that if the deal between Iran and six big powers, which curtailed Iran´s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, is not "improved" by then, he will withdraw.

The sanctions would be particularly imposed against Iranian nationals involved in the development of the country's ballistic missile progam, Reuters reported, citing a document it obtained.

In October 2017, Trump finally decertified the Iran deal, which effectively opened the door for the U.S. Congress to reimpose sanctions.

It might also encourage other countries, namely the UK, France, and Germany, to pull out of the deal as well.

"This is a last chance", Trump warned them.

"While Pompeo is probably more trusted by Trump than Tillerson was, he has been far more hawkish about blowing up the Iran nuclear deal even though it is working and on the prospect of "regime change" in North Korea".
