Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth confirmed to The Detroit Free Press that Strampel was being held, but he said that he wouldn't comment on the charges until arraignment. "We would encourage anybody with information, whether it be about former Dean Strampel or whether it's about anything at Michigan State that they're concerned about, call the hotline at the attorney general's office and report that". He told police a year ago that he never followed up after ordering Nassar in 2014 to have a third person present when providing treatment to "anything close to a sensitive area".

A Michigan State University dean who supervised convicted serial molester Larry Nassar is denying criminal charges against him.

Strampel told police past year he never followed up after ordering Nassar in 2014 to have a third person present when providing treatment to "anything close to a sensitive area". He is the first university official to face charges from an investigation into how complaints against disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar were handled. A February letter to the school's provost from Carol Viventi, the vice president and special counsel to Michigan State's president, said Strampel "failed to monitor and enforce clinical practice guidelines put in place for former doctor Larry Nassar following the conclusion of a 2014 sexual harassment investigation". In return, Strampel said, V-3 would be required to do anything for him.

Nassar is serving decades in prison for sexual abuse and possessing child pornography.

Strampel stepped down from his role as dean - a role he filled since 2002 and throughout Nassar's career at the university - in December of 2017, citing health reasons. After a judge authorized the charges, a state police detective declined to tell reporters what charges Strampel is facing, saying a news conference is scheduled for later.

Two of the charges announced Tuesday - both misdemeanor counts of willful neglect of public duty - relate to Strampel's handling of an April 2014 complaint by a 24-year-old woman that Nassar massaged her breast and vaginal area in a sexual manner at a campus clinic when he was supposed to be providing treatment for hip pain.

Nassar was sacked in 2016 for violating that rule.

"In 2016, when the allegation of actual, sexual assault was made, my client immediately terminated Nassar".

After Ms Thomashow's complaint against Nassar in 2014, Mr Strampel allegedly restored the doctor's position at the school, during which time he was able to molest 20 more women before coming to trial.

A student at the College of Osteopathic Medicine accused William Strampel, 70, of forcible sexual contact, prosecutors said in papers filed in state district court in East Lansing.

In January, more than 150 victims - 156 to be exact - delivered impact statements during a seven-day sentencing hearing that started.

MSU Interim President John Engler moved to begin revoking Strampel's tenure in February, stating Strampel did not act with a level of professionalism MSU expects from senior officials. Another woman alleged that Strampel once suggested "she become a centerfold model", and told her about another female medical student who became a stripper to pay for medical school.

Ryan Pennell, investigators also discovered several pornographic videos on Strampel's work computer, including at least one of Nassar performing an "examination" on a patient.

"It demonstrates that (Schuette) is serious about investigating the systemic misconduct at MSU that led to the largest child sex abuse scandal in history and holding the responsible parties accountable", he said.
