Red Sparrow is no box office match for Black Panther

Dergarabedian said, "Disney wins no matter how you slice it with that film expected to have a strong debut as "Black Panther' continues to draw big crowds".

There's no stopping Marvel's Black Panther as it continues its astonishing run with a $65.7 million domestic gross in its third weekend. Jennifer Lawrence's Red Sparrow and the remake Death Wish featuring Willis placed second and third. It's also knocking on the door of $1 billion worldwide with a global total of $897.7 million. It also added an additional $26.5M overseas for a worldwide opening weekend total of $43.5M. The domestic gross of "Black Panther" is more than that of the next 10 movies on the top grossing list of 2018 combined.

Two new releases this week hardly challenged "Black Panther" at the chart. It feels as though Marvel's latest has done nothing but break box office records and pass milestones since it released just a few weeks ago. And another premiere, "Death Wish" from MGM, captured $13 million in ticket sales to open in third place. The film cost roughly $69 million (including Lawrence's estimated $15-20 million salary) to make and now has a 51 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I don't expect it to hang around very long, but it only cost MGM $30 million to make, so add in some foreign box office and they should have a victor in the end. It was the third-best third weekend for any movie ever.

"Death Wish" follows in the trend of macho action films like "American Assassin" and "Den of Thieves", which are made relatively cheap for $25-40 million and are able to produce a solid return for their studios. Universal Pictures' erotic series Fifty Shades Freed is in second-place this year with $95.6 million. Rounding out the top 5 this weekend are Game Night in fourth with $10.7M and Peter Rabbit in fifth with $10M, but it's possible that they could swap spots when the actual numbers are released tomorrow, since they're so close to each other.
