Russian Federation vetoes United Nations measure to call out Iran over arming Yemen's Houthis

The Iranian diplomat also reiterated Tehran's stance on Yemen, stressing that only a political solution and intra-Yemeni dialog can put an end to the country's conflict.

Russian Federation vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Iranian meddling in Yemen on Monday evening, using its diplomatic muscle to force through a weaker text extending an arms embargo on the war-torn country.

Kuwait's U.N. Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaiba is the current council president.

On Monday, the resolution gained 11 favorable votes at the 15-member Security Council but was halted by Russia's veto.

Allen said his country was deeply concerned that Iran has failed to take necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply of short-range ballistic missiles, missile propellents and unmanned aerial vehicles to Houthi rebels in Yemen, as reported by the Panel of Experts.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said Russia "cannot concur with uncorroborated conclusions and evidence which requires verification and discussions within the Sanctions Committee".

The U.N. Security Council will decide whether it will renew sanctions on Yemen Monday, and add Iran to the list.

The rival Russian-drafted text presented to the council on Saturday and seen by AFP would extend the sanctions regime on Yemen until February 2019 without any reference to the United Nations report's findings on Iran and possible action targeting Tehran. Nebenzia explained that efforts were made to extend sanctions on Yemen, not to target Iran.

The UN Security Council's condemnation of Iran for its destabilizing actions in Yemen was blocked by Russian Federation, its ally. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, backing government forces fighting Iran-allied Houthi rebels.

Meanwhile, Iran's envoy to the United Nations says that the U.S. and the UK are trying to distract the global community away from Saudi Arabia's war crimes in Yemen by drafting such resolutions.
