Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has declared that Stoke City proved tougher opponents than Chelsea after watching his side grind out a 2-1 win at the bet365 Stadium.

Eriksen fired in Tottenham's victor from a free-kick although the goal was initially credited to striker Harry Kane, who claimed he got the faintest of touches as he attempted a header.

"I think it's very good news for the club, for the company it was a record for the club and was very positive news for Tottenham", the 46-year-old added. "I told them it would be tough as they are playing to survive".

That would be his best haul across one campaign for Tottenham and would also take Kane four goals behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who is leading the way in the race to finish as the divison's leading marksman.

Xherdan Shaqiri nearly secured Stoke a share of the spoils 10 minutes from time, but his free-kick came back off the crossbar and Spurs held on to the victory which leaves them only behind third-placed Liverpool on goal difference.

Stoke levelled soon after, however, as Lloris smashed a clearance against Diouf and the striker tapped into the empty goal. "It flicked off my shoulder and went in".

Stoke are now three points off 17th. Even against Man City we had a reasonable game and never got really cut open.

He continued: "I'm so sorry, because of course Toby was an important player for us in the last two seasons". Rotation sometimes is because of performances, sometimes it's to provide the team with fresh legs or for different reasons that we have in our ideas or our plan for the team.
