January 14, 1985: Trans Mountain's biggest spill occurs at a tank farm in the Edmonton area.
The myth of "world class oil spill response, prevention and recovery" is just that, a myth. Estimates of open-water recovery by mechanical equipment recoup only 10 to 15 per cent of the oil from a marine spill at best; in other words, a very low bar exists to achieve so-called world-class status.
The idea would be to bring in a bill presumably declaring the pipeline will be built because it's in the national interest and federal laws supersede provincial laws when it comes to power over inter-provincial projects.
Kinder Morgan also set a deadline of May 31 to get "certainty" on the project so it could alleviate the concerns of its shareholders, which caused the feds to scramble.
He has insisted that the pipeline falls under federal purview and that British Columbia has no right to block it. About 200 people have been arrested near Kinder Morgan's marine terminal in Burnaby during recent protests. Most of the charges are later dropped.
Trudeau revealed that discussions with Kinder Morgan around assistance are already underway in Calgary, Toronto and New York City.

Aside from a very vague release window and an image or two, we hardly know a thing about this upcoming piece of hardware. The console will come pre-loaded with a selection of older games , though we don't have a final list yet.
For months, the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia have been locked in a standoff over plans, spearheaded by Texas-based Kinder Morgan, to expand an existing pipeline and lay almost 1,000km of new pipe from Alberta's oil sands to the Pacific coast.
No First Nation leaders were invited to the meeting.
Jonathan Wilkinson, parliamentary secretary for the minister of environment and climate change, issued a statement at that rally back in March, saying he supported the project.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has put his Liberal government squarely behind the Kinder Morgan Trans Canada pipeline - angering environmentalists and empowering the oil-rich province of Alberta.
"B.C.ers and Albertans are not opponents; they are neighbours", the prime minister said. The parties agree to "immediately employ every tool available" to stop the project.
Some observers suggest, however, that Ottawa could step in with an insurance guarantee that would effectively repay Kinder Morgan any financial losses it incurs due to delayed construction - or if the project is scrapped outright.
The project has drawn legal challenges and opposition from environmental groups and Native American tribes as well as from municipalities such as Vancouver and Burnaby.

In an interview with French business daily Les Echos ahead of a visit to Paris, Trudeau acknowledged that environmentalists were "concerned" by the Trans Mountain pipeline.
January 18, 2018: NEB establishes a process to resolve permitting issues between Kinder Morgan Canada and provincial and municipal authorities.
The prime minister said the project - which would almost triple the flow of Alberta's bitumen to the west coast - is in the national interest.
Asked about B.C.'s rebuttal of Trudeau's claim, Alexandre Deslongchamps, a spokesman for Carr, said earlier Monday that senior federal officials travelled twice to B.C.in February to talk about the details of the federal oceans plan.
Prominent Indigenous leaders in British Columbia say Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has "failed" to protect the rights of indigenous people in the province.
Since Kinder Morgan suspended all non-essential spending on the project last week, there's been tension over the expansion.
"The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is of vital strategic interest to Canada", Trudeau said after an emergency summit with the premiers of Alberta and British Columbia on Sunday.
