Prince Philip recovering after 'successful' hip replacement surgery

Prince Philip retired from public life a year ago but has since appeared several times at royal engagements alongside Queen Elizabeth.

Greek-born Philip has remained at his wife's side throughout her 66-year reign, the longest in British history, and has earned a reputation for brusque comments and occasional gaffes at some of the thousands of ceremonial events he has attended.

In May 2017, the Duke of Edinburgh stepped down from his royal duties after announcing his retirement.

Some media reports in the United Kingdom indicated that the timing of Prince Philip's hip replacement surgery was in preparation for the activities that will be involved in the royal wedding ceremony.

"His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has undergone a successful hip replacement operation and is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage", Buckingham Palace said.
