Death toll rises after Pakistan mine explosions

The Marwar coalfields are some 60 kilometers east of the Baluchistan capital, Quetta.

The rescue operation resumed Sunday morning in which bodies of five more labourers were recovered.

Rescue officials said a dozen of the dead miners belonged to Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Two bodies had been recovered and several injured labourers were evacuated on Saturday.

"We have also rescued six workers who are trapped in the rubble and have sent them to hospital for treatment but one miner is still trapped under the rubble" he said.

He said the seven miners were working 3,400 feet deep inside the mine when the landslide occurred inside it, burying the seven, adding that the landslide might have been caused by some activity taking place under the mine. According to Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation (PCMLF), about 100 to 200 labourers die on average in coalmine accidents every year.

A total of 43 workers died in 2011 when gas explosions triggered a collapse in another Balochistan colliery, also owned by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation. It is much more hazardous than hard rock mining due to leakage or explosion of poisonous gases and coal dust, collapsing of mine stopes or malfunctioning mining equipment.
