Instagram starts trialling in-app payments

For now, the Native Payments feature is available for booking appointments at a limited number of partners such as restaurants or salons.

One of the initial partners is Resy which is a dinner reservation service serving locations like New York, Hamptons, Los Angeles, Napa, Chicago etc. Similarly, with payments feature coming to Instagram, users will now be able to shop without having to leave the app. As per the new payment application, which is now displayed in the login of specific users, one can enter payment details into the app along with a PIN for more secured access. The payments feature on Instagram not only let users to add their debit or credit card details but also track previous payments within the app itself.

The payments option on Instagram will work with its Shoppable Tags.

The photo and video sharing platform, which in November celebrated reaching 25 million listed business profiles, outlined its plans to "continue evolving business profiles" in March 2017 by rolling out the ability for users to book a service directly from a business' profile. The Instagram payments feature is now available only to select users, however, we expect the global rollout to happen very soon, most possibly in the next few months to come. Snapchat also added this feature named as Snapcash, Instagram getting this feature little late. For now, the feature is only available for select users in the USA as well as in the UK. If Instagram does find the feature useful and makes it available to all its userbase, it can go a long way to help businesses that run on Instagram. What remains to be seen, is if Instagram will also introduce peer-to-peer payments similar to Messenger in the future. However, WhatsApp has around 1.5 billion active users per month, which is almost twice what Messenger has, and that provides a great potential to Facebook's ad revenue.
