Neither leader was quoted as directly referring to Kim's meeting late last month with South Korean President Moon Jae-in or his planned summit in coming weeks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Like the March summit in Beijing, the Dalian summit was kept secret until Kim's plane left for Pyongyang on Tuesday afternoon.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has told Chinese President Xi Jinping that his country is committed to denuclearisation if a "relevant party" drops "hostile threats".

North Korea's state media reported that Kim travelled to Dalian via a special plane and was accompanied by his sister Kim Yo-jong and Ri Su-yong, a vice party chairman on global affairs.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency even went to the extent of saying that the plane carried North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un to China although it did not produce any evidence, AP said.

"At this very moment, Secretary Pompeo is on his way to North Korea in preparation for my upcoming meeting with Kim Jong-un", Trump said.

By having Kim, or a high-level official, visit for the carrier launch, China may be trying to re-assert themselves in the North Korea conversation.

As inter-Korean talks continue and a summit between Kim and President Donald Trump looms, Xi may be looking to insert China into the dialogue which has appeared to put United States interests first.

The two leaders apparently discussed their countries' relations, according to reports.

The agency added Mr Kim told Mr Xi he had come to inform him about the rapidly changing regional situation.

In exchange for a revised peace treaty, South Korea has agreed to work in conjunction with the North to denuclearize the peninsula, disarming one of the most unsafe regions in the world in terms of atomic power and political instability.

"So what they're saying here is, 'We will be less belligerent toward you in exchange for certain concessions.' But notice what North Korea is not willing to talk about, and that is the war on their own people".

The Kim-Xi meet could well be read as a sign that China has the influence over North Korea, which is dependent on Beijing in terms of food and other imports.

Some analysts have said China also wants to keep its influence on North Korea amid diplomatic efforts by Seoul and Washington to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula. He meets at the White House on May 22 with Moon.

Shortly after the news of Kim-Xi meeting, Trump said he would speak with the Chinese President on North Korea.

China is North Korea's only major ally, although trade between them has plummeted in recent months as Beijing enforces United Nations economic sanctions in response to the North's nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

For his part, Kim said both the DPRK-China friendship and the Korean Peninsula situation have undergone meaningful progress since his visit to Beijing in March this year.

Dalian was also the site of a 2010 meeting between Mr. Kim's father, Kim Jong-il, and Mr. Li, who is now China's premier.
