The Lib Dems now have two of the three councillors for Pallion, following February's election to fill the vacant seat of late council leader Paul Watson, who died previous year.

He told the WHT: "We gained seats from both Labour and the Conservatives, we now represent the majority of Welwyn Garden City - four out of seven [wards] - with our biggest group ever".

Welwyn Hatfield's Conservatives have clung onto control of the borough council after a roller coaster election.

The Tories retained control of Wandsworth Council, last won by Labour in 1974, after winning more than half the seats, as well as Westminster City Council.

By the time counting finished at Silksworth Community Pool Tennis & Wellness Centre just after midnight on Thursday, the party had wobbled, but still maintains an overwhelming majority in the council chamber.

The Tories also gained three seats.

Two of the three new Conservative city councillors are familiar faces, with Christopher Reid and Hilton Spratt now Lincolnshire county councillors.

The overall tally, not due until 1900 GMT, will offer the most complete snapshot of public opinion since an election previous year in which the Conservatives suffered unexpected losses, leaving May weakened and her party arguing openly about Brexit.
