United's record signing has had another inconsistent season and the club's decision makers now want to cut their losses.

Before hosting Watford, United visit West Ham United on Thursday evening (Friday morning AEST), knowing a point will be enough to guarantee second place in the table.

United's squad contains some wonderful footballers, although far too often this season, that talent has not translated into exciting performances.

However, there's one player that the Portuguese is desperate to keep a hold although it appears his mind is not set for changing.

"Of course, he has qualities that we believe can make him a good coach and there are many ways to do the bridge between player and coaching staff". The most important quality is to be a man and football is not full of them. Not two, three or four.

The United manager did not refer to City directly, but did discuss the advantages of a "perfect squad" where a manager can buy one goalkeeper, then drop him and buy another, as Guardiola has done with Claudio Bravo and Ederson.

Apparently though, Mourinho believes Young is a top player and expects him to make plenty of appearances during the next campaign.

But despite French champions Paris Saint-Germain reportedly being prepared to launch a bid for the 25-year-old, Mourinho told a news conference on Wednesday: "I think he is going to be here next season".

As of midday Friday, oil prices traded near $70 per barrel for the first time since 2014. Brent crude oil futures were at $75.81 a barrel on Monday morning, up 94 cents.

Mourinho has no plans for a major overhaul of his squad, arguing he does not have the finances to buy players at will, which could be interpreted as a criticism of Manchester City.
