Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk promised a cheering crowd on Thursday that his controversial dream of burrowing a high-speed network of "personalized mass transit" tunnels under Los Angeles could be achieved without disturbance or noise at the surface.
The Boring Company has taken it slow, choosing to build a 2.1-mile proof-of-concept tunnel in below SpaceX's parking lot in the town of Hawthorne. While the company has chiefly been in the news for its unique efforts to raise money by selling hats and flamethrowers, Elon sought to throw some light on the project's progress yesterday at a rare public appearance in a Boring Company Information Session in Los Angeles.
The idea is for the vehicles to offer a service somewhere between riding a subway and traveling in a private auto - and for just $1 (R12.50), passengers could reach downtown LA from its global airport in under 10 minutes. That's the big difference between the Boring Company concept and traditional subway systems. "We are going to be the best possible community member", he said.
Senate Democrats win vote on net neutrality, a centerpiece of 2018 strategy
Pai argued that the Obama-era commission was too heavy handed with its regulation and stifled small internet service providers. Representatives already began lobbying for the effort in the House, which is now lacking the necessary votes to pass.
Elon has faced financial and regulatory hurdles in getting The Boring Company off the ground.
According to the city, the proposed tunnel would begin with the entry/exit point at 2352-6 Sepulveda Boulevard, north of West Pico Boulevard, in West Los Angeles. The proposal inspired a lawsuit against the city by the Brentwood Residents Coalition and the Sunset Coalition.
"Once we're done, in order to get public feedback, we want to offer free rides sort of like a weird little Disney ride in the middle of LA", Musk said.

Earlier, before the session, Musk retweeted LA Metro tweet announcing the prolonged partnership with The Boring Company and that they are going forward with their plans to build in-city Loop for the underground fast travel system.
The plan calls for excavated soil to be compacted into concrete reinforcement segments for the tunnels, or turned into construction bricks.
A crowd of about 700 people, followers of Musk, a few seen wearing Tesla Company hats, cheering along to numerous comments made by Musk and the answers given by Musk for various questions asked after his presentation was quite challenging. Musk commented, "we're not suggesting this to the exclusion of other approaches". The whole tunnel will be privately funded and will not be used for public transportation, the company said.
