"The two leaders frankly exchanged their opinions on implementing the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration [which the two struck in April at their first historic summit] and for the successful staging of a U.S. -NK summit", Blue House spokesman Yoon Young-chan said. -North Korea summit at a previously unannounced meeting Saturday, South Korean officials announced. During Saturday's inter-Korean summit, the Korean leaders agreed to "positively cooperate with each other as ever to improve (North Korea)-U.S. relations and establish (a) mechanism for permanent and durable peace".

But the White House stunned the world Thursday by canceling the meeting 18 days before it was due to take place and by warning that the us military is prepared to act.

An unexpected meeting between the leaders of South and North Korea today has reignited hopes that a cancelled peace summit with US President Donald Trump could be revived.

The meeting between Moon and Kim took place in a grand building on the North Korean side of Panmunjom, a surreal and heavily fortified village that lies between the two countries and marks the spot where the armistice ending the Korean War in 1953 was signed.

Jared Kushner granted security clearance
The White House denied that the lack of a clearance would hamper Kushner's work, even though he was the White House point man on Middle East peace talks.

After years of tension over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, Kim and Trump agreed this month to hold what would be the first meeting between a serving USA president and a North Korean leader.

In April, former Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo flew to Pyongyang for a meeting with Kim-Jong un, declaring the two had built a "good relationship".

Both the State Department and South Korea's Foreign Ministry said the American and North Korean officials have been engaged in talks at the Korean village of Panmunjom, which straddles the border inside the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ. "We'll see what happens", Trump told reporters.

Trump then issued his own threat in a letter to Kim.

The US also claimed in a background briefing that North Korean officials had failed to show up in Singapore to arrange logistics for the June meeting.

Trump backtracked less than 24 hours later, saying on Friday that a meeting with Kim is still possible for June 12. Apparently flip-flopping thrice in one week over whether or not to participate in a critical event is a symptom of a unified, strategic White House.

At the Pentagon, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday that "the diplomats are still at work on the summit" but declined to say whether he thought the event would take place on June 12. The meeting between the two would be centered around, if all goes according to plan, the denuclearization of North Korea.

Moon said Trump's decision left him "perplexed" and was 'very regrettable'.
