Tammany Parish School Board set to trim property tax rate

Tonight's school board meeting is happening at 7 p.m.at the Hackley Administration building.

There are also two candidates for the board of education, James Maio and Martin Kelly.

CAMDEN - Voters will have their say on a proposed $52.22 million Camden school district general fund budget for the 2018-19 school year that includes an approximately 2 percent local property tax levy increase.

With Tuesday's election day looming ever closer, among the decisions voters will be making at the polls are the proposed 2018-2019 school budgets for the Waverly and Tioga Central school districts.

After a thorough review of the proposal submitted by the Steering Committee of the North Champaign Academy, the Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education denies the proposal. Board president James Howard did not return a phone call seeking comment.

The Mamaroneck school district is also asking voters to override the tax cap.

Residents need to to refer to their local districts for times and locations for voting. The proposed 2018-19 budget is $69.8 million, the purchase of a Springs-Fireplace Road property for a bus depot is on the ballot, and three candidates are running for two seats on the board.

Board members Catherine Wega, Christine Swailes, Sherri Newell, Larry Schuler, Patrick Musto, Ed Dudick and Susan Allen supported the plan with Gary Youngblood and Kristin Pitarra voting against it. The seat on the three-member board was vacated by longtime member Joseph Louchheim, publisher of the Press News Group, who decided not to seek reelection after serving three, three-year terms on the board.
