The concessions US President Donald Trump manages to extract from North Korea's Kim Jong Un at Tuesday's summit will be the measure of its success.

Kim Jong Un's Ilyushin IL-62M private jet appears to be en route to Singapore, data at the Flight Radar 24 website showed on Sunday.

As far as we know, his despot father only traveled out of the country by train, and rarely at that, because of fears of assassination.

The recently upgraded jet - which has a range of some 5000 miles - is nearly certainly carrying Kim to Singapore, having been used by the North Korean leader for a visit to Dalian in China this year.

"This mismatch between US and North Korean goals has remained more or less consistent over the decades and has so far stymied all agreements that have emerged between the two sides since the first round of bilateral denuclearization negotiations in the early 1990s".

Sporadic provocations by the North have continued while Pyongyang has made increasing advances in its nuclear arsenal, which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a USA invasion.

The newspaper said the vehicles weren't from a local authorized dealer, which suggests the cars were brought in specifically for the summit and may be used by Kim. Both governments had their respective victories, but Kim was the bigger victor.

One benefit of Singapore from the North Korean point of view is that there will probably not be any anti-North Korea protests during Kim's stay.

The summit venue, roads and hotels in Singapore will be secured by the Gurkha Contingent of the Singaporean police, according to diplomats familiar with VIP security in the island state. How can such rallies take place there? A direct flight from Pyongyang landed in Singapore on Saturday, raising speculation that a delegation of North Korean officials had joined an advance team headed by Kim's close aide, Kim Chang Son, who was in Singapore to prepare for the talks.

This would further reinforce the softer image Kim Jong Un has enjoyed in South Korea after the inter-Korean summit.

Trump and Kim are set to meet in Singapore on Tuesday to try to reach a deal on dismantling the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for security guarantees. A much more hard, but crucial, "get" would be a full "declaration and accounting of all North Korean nuclear sites and fissile material".

North Korea's secrecy would make it hard to end its nuclear program quickly, said Robert Einhorn, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Even Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, generally averse to publicly criticizing fellow Republican leaders, warned the president last week that "you could get snookered".

But after North Korea repeated its eagerness to meet, the summit was back on. "It was fun to see them", he said. Their only issue is how much they have to give up.

So while separating families might not have been the administration's intention, it is an obvious effect of the policy. As I said, detention is never in the best interest of the child and always constitutes a child rights violation.

"It's a one time shot, and I think it's going to work out very well", Trump said in a wide-ranging press conference Saturday.
