New Spider-Man Gameplay Trailer Brings the Baddies

It was one of the most exhilarating actions in any game up to that point, and it should have been a formula that Activision and Treyarch could have repeated for years. From traversing with parkour and utilizing the environment, to new combat and blockbuster set pieces, it's Spider-Man unlike any you've played before.

PlayStation's E3 2018 Showcase finally gave us an expanded look at the game, showing details about the gameplay and its risky world.

Looking a bit like the premise behind Batman's breakout game, Arkham Asylum, the trailer begins with Electro breaking out all the prisoners from the supermax prison The Raft. One of my favorite mechanics is the ability to toss environmental objects at your foes, whether you're toppling the bad guys with debris or throwing their grenades right back at them for a big knockdown.

Spider-Man is awesome - at least based on what I played. This is an all-new Spider-Man universe, featuring familiar characters in unfamiliar roles. Here we learn about a new villain - this was later confirmed in a PlayStation blogcast. After an intermission as journalists were shuffled into a different room (during which we saw e.g. a recap of games Sony had already announced), we got a shakuhachi performance, similar to The Last of Us II having a banjo perfomance from Gustavo Santaolalla before its gameplay earlier. My one gripe with the combat is that it nearly felt too frenetic at times - there were moments where Spidey felt too slippery for my liking, and also instances when the game's camera seemed to have a mind of its own. But this game feels more proactive.
