Kim Yong-chol, the right-hand man of DPRK leader Kim Jong-un, is in the United States and is set to visit the White House on Friday as the two sides scramble to get the Kim-Trump summit back on track after the U.S. president canceled it.

The historic meeting between Mr Trump and Kim Jong-un would be the first between sitting U.S. and North Korean leaders. While Cho said an agreement would "not be impossible" to strike during the talks, the run-up to the scheduled June 12 summit has somewhat devolved into a war of the wills over who more wants the meeting.

Kim Yong Chol spent roughly one hour and twenty minutes at the White House and emerged from the Oval Office with Trump and Pompeo to take photos and shake hands. Kim is likely to receive a proposal that he would have to refuse on June 12, which would prompt a reaction from Washington, Glazebrook added. I purposely didn't open the letter.

Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping credit for helping to move the talks with North Korea forward. He arrived in the USA to deliver a letter from Kim Jong-un to Trump.

"It's absolutely obvious that when a conversation starts about solving the nuclear problem and other problems of the Korean Peninsula, we proceed from the fact that the decision can't be complete while sanctions are still in place", he said.

Trump also said he viewed the Pompeo talks as a positive step, and that he "looks forward" to seeing what the letter says.

His meeting with Pompeo is expected to determine whether the two sides have enough common ground to go ahead with the summit on dismantling the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for concessions.

Gen Kim has previously served as chief of Pyongyang's top military intelligence agency, and was sanctioned twice by USA and South Korea for his role in supporting North Korea's nuclear and missile programme in 2010 and 2016.

North Korea's nuclear weapons programme has made significant advances in recent years and poses a threat to the United States.

"Good working dinner with Kim Yong Chol in NY tonight", Pompeo tweeted after the dinner, along with photos of them shaking hands and clinking glasses over the table. But he has since put it back on track following a conciliatory statement from the regime. "As we move to adjust to the political situation in the face of USA hegemonism, I am willing to exchange detailed and in-depth opinions with your leadership and hope to do so moving forward", Kim told Sergey Lavrov.
