Israeli army says patriot missile shot down syrian drone

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to attend the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after meeting with Russia President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.

The Israeli Defence Force tweeted early on Thursday morning to confirm they had targeted "three military posts" in Syria earlier that evening.

Israel is anxious about the presence of Iran, another Assad ally, in Syria, and demands all Iranian forces would completely withdraw from Syria.

It was shot down over the Sea of Galilee and the army has ordered all boats off the water as a precautionary measure, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The air base was also hit on February 10, after Israel accused Iranian forces at the T-4 base of sending a drone into Israeli territory.

"We were afraid in the beginning to come [because we view Israelis] as Zionists and enemies", said an anonymous Syrian mother quoted by Ynet, who then added that "it's the opposite". Russian Federation has been a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the Syrian civil war and its forces on the ground have managed to turn the tide in Assad's favor in recent years.

Netanyahu's remarks came as reports said Russian Federation would act to push Iranian forces from near the Syria-Israel border, and in exchange, Israel is expected not to "intervene" in Assad's efforts to stabilize his rule. Damascus also repeatedly denied that the Iranian military has any significant presence in Syria, noting that only the Islamic Republic's military advisers are now present on the ground. He said a stray drone was "not common".

"There should be no military forces in the area of separation other than those of UNDOF", a United Nations spokesman said.

There were no reports of casualties afrer the attack, either from Israel or Syria.

Netanyahu's government has made clear it would not now cede the plateau and has been lobbying for U.S. recognition of Israel's claim of sovereignty there.

The incident comes weeks after Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a Patriot interceptor missile at a drone prompting the incoming unmanned aerial vehicle to beat a retreat before it crossed the border.

Though allied with Assad, Moscow has largely given Israeli warplanes a free hand over Syrian skies and has turned a blind eye to frequent strikes attributed to Israel targeting outposts housing Iranian and Iran-backed forces and armaments, including heavy weapons convoys believed destined for Hezbollah.
