Mr Manafort faces a second trial in September on charges related to his lobbying work in Ukraine. Manafort left Trump's campaign soon afterwards.

When Mueller initially filed charges - which came first in an indictment handed down in October by a grand jury in D.C. - Gates seemed ready to fight the case.

Prosecutors allege that Manafort hid income he earned through political consulting for Yanukovych and funneled it through offshore accounts.

Ellis has since ruled that Mueller is acting within the scope of his investigation in pursuing charges against Manafort.

On Tuesday, a court will work to seat the 12 Northern Virginians who will decide whether President Trump's former campaign chairman is guilty of several felonies. Manafort has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

The maximum sentence for these 18 counts is 305 years in prison. Having his former campaign chairman, who helped run Trump's campaign at a critical point of the election, in the news so consistently shines a negative light on him.

While the trial may touch on Manafort's communications during the campaign with his partners in the former Soviet bloc, the trial is not expected to focus on campaign ties to Russian Federation.

Mueller has submitted more than 500 pieces of evidence, including tax filings and mortgage statements, and pictures of Manafort's expensive watches and homes. "He could expose himself to further criminal culpability if he has to expose the full extent of those ties".

Donna Duggan, Cindy Laporta and Conor O'Brien also were granted immunity to testify against Manafort.
