On this legislation, US President Donald Trump has commented that it will provide additional tools to combat predatory investment practices that threaten the US fundamental technological leadership, national security, and future economic prosperity.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on August 8 that tariffs of 25 percent on 16 billion dollars of us goods - including autos, fuel, steel products and medical equipment - will be activated on August 23, the same day when Washington initiates tariffs on an equivalent amount of Chinese imports. That strained relations with US allies.

"While taking protectionist measures against imported photovoltaic products, the United States provided subsidies to domestically produced photovoltaics and other renewable energy products", the ministry said in a statement.

One Chinese executive told Reuters that USA solar tariffs were a "sideshow" and had little effect on Chinese business.

China responded two days later by proposing tariffs ranging from 5 percent to 25 percent on 5,207 USA goods worth 60 billion dollars.
