Man kills alleged intruder, then police arrived and killed him

A resident of Colorado, defending your home from an attacker, was shot and killed by police who mistook him for the attacker.

Police received multiple calls about a break-in at the home at about 1:30 a.m., and when officers arrived, they heard gunshots inside, The Aurora Sentinel reported.

They reportedly encountered an armed man and an officer shot him. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact police at 303-739-6710. A child suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries at the hands of the intruder.

They were stolen from the Cathedral of Strangnas, a 900-year-old church around 80 miles from the capital, Stockholm . Police quickly mobilised and pursued the thieves by sea, on land, in helicopters and planes.

The Denver Police Department is assisting with the investigation, Aurora police spokesperson Kenneth Forrest said.

The resident of the house and the robber has not been identified by police.

"He was a family man - a grandpa that was protecting his family", Maestas told the paper, which also did not identify the man.

Aurora police and the Adams County District Attorney have refused to answer follow-up questions about the incident, saying it could harm the ongoing investigation.

On Monday police reportedly confirmed that one person was in custody and that the shark was alive. Police don't believe the shark was taken to sell but to be added to the suspect's collection.

"Our preliminary investigation has revealed the deceased intruder on the bathroom floor was fatally shot by the armed adult male resident", the Aurora Police Department stated in a news release. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time", Metz said.

Findings will be turned over to the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office, which will determine whether any criminal charges will be filed against any involved person, the office said in a release.

The armed homeowner - whose name hasn't been released - was taken to a hospital where he died, the paper said.

This is the second deadly officer-involved shooting in recent days by Aurora police.
