Under pressure, Trump re-lowers White House flag for McCain

On Thursday, a private memorial service will take place at the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country", Mr. Trump said in a statement as he ordered the flag atop the White House and elsewhere to fly at half-staff until Mr. McCain's burial on Sunday. Following the morning ceremony, the public will be allowed to pay their respects for the remainder of the day.

Later that day, McCain's body will depart from Arizona and be flown to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

Former presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama are expected to speak at a service at Washington National Cathedral on Saturday. As he wished, McCain will be buried next to a Naval Academy classmate and lifelong friend, Chuck Larson.

"On the behalf of The American Legion's two million wartime veterans, I strongly urge you to make an appropriate presidential proclamation noting Senator McCain's death and legacy of service to our nation, and that our nation's flag be half-staffed through his internment".

"Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here", McCain wrote shortly before his death.

However, after widespread criticism came over U.S. media, the flags were again lowered on Monday afternoon as Trump made his first reference to McCain: "Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country".

White House chief of staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary James Mattis and National Security Advisor John Bolton will represent the administration during services.

Mr McCain's family said the late Vietnam War veteran, who was hailed as a hero for spending months in enemy prison after being captured, recently demanded that his doctors should stop administering medication because his cancer had reached irrecoverable stage. "Some voices are so vibrant, it's hard to think of them stilled".

"Few sacrificed more for, or contributed more to, the welfare of his fellow citizens - and indeed freedom-loving peoples around the world", the elder Bush said in a statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted in English that McCain "was a true American hero".

Mr. Trump's initial silence about Mr. McCain underscored the isolation of the USA leader and fueled criticism that he is incapable of bringing a divided nation together even as it mourns a man widely seen as an American hero and a political icon.
