Spotty to scattered showers will increase on Wednesday and Thursday as Tropical Storm Gordon's leftovers weaken well to our west.

A storm spinning toward the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Coast is expected to turn into a tropical storm late Monday, bringing heavy rains, strong winds and risky tides, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Florida Keys have already experienced the heavy rain and wind from the tropical storm.

The worst conditions are expected to arrive along the north central Gulf Coast by late afternoon Tuesday and, especially, Tuesday evening.

Sustained winds of tropical-storm-force are likely in the zone under a hurricane warning, with the possibility of hurricane-force gusts, over 74 miles per hour. The storm is moving toward the northwest across the lower Mississippi Valley, bringing with it rain and potential flooding. Red flags flew over Pensacola-area beaches in Florida's Panhandle, where swimming and wading in the Gulf of Mexico was prohibited.

Flooding also was a risk.

Gordon struck the coast at 70 miles per hour, just shy of hurricane strength, near Pascagoula, Mississippi late Tuesday.

L. J. Cazaux moved his boat to a nearby lot of elevated land before the rain started in one of the areas outside the protective system, Venetian Isles.

Gordon was forecast to come ashore between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time on Tuesday (0000 GMT to 0200 GMT Wednesday) along the Mississippi Gulf coast near the Louisiana state line as a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Okaloosa county stretching west through Louisiana. The region could see rising waters of 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 metres).

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning areas. A storm surge warning was extended east to Dauphin Island. Thankfully, Tropical Storm Gordon will be sparing Houston of its wrath.

The storm's predicted track had shifted slightly east as of Monday evening, meaning Louisiana is now just outside the area under the hurricane warning.

The Mississippi cities of Gulfport, Biloxi and Long Beach ordered mandatory evacuations of their harbors and marinas, and the U.S. Coast Guard said the ports of New Orleans and of Gulfport and Pascagoula in Mississippi could have to be closed if winds get too strong.
