A man buys tickets for Tuesday's Mega Millions lottery drawing after the jackpot exceeded US$1.6 billion in New York City, New York, October 23, 2018.

The six winning numbers drawn on Tuesday night were five, 28, 62, 65, 70 and another five as the special "gold Mega Ball".

The estimated prize for Powerball's annuity option in Wednesday night's drawing is $US620 million, with a cash prize of $US354.3 million.

The jackpot's cash value was $878 million, an option favored by most winners.

For matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 419 tickets won the game's $10,000 third prize Tuesday night.

The next Mega Millions drawing is scheduled for Friday at 11 p.m. with an estimated $40 million jackpot.
