Toyota recalls 2.4m hybrid vehicles over stalling issue

Toyota has announced that it will recall 55,519 hybrid cars in the United Kingdom as part of a 2.4 million-car global recall.

This is reportedly coming barely a month after another recall affecting hybrids.

The firm in September said it was recalling more than one million hybrid cars globally after uncovering a technical problem that could cause fires.

Toyota said in a statement that the recalled vehicles-2012-2014 Toyota Prius and Toyota Prius V models-were created to enter a failsafe driving mode that cuts engine power dramatically if their engine computer systems detected a serious fault.

The identified fault occurs when a specific hybrid component failure, coupled with hard acceleration, causes the vehicle to lose power rather than enter a fail-safe driving mode.

Borneo Motors, the authorised distributor for Toyota in Singapore, said in an email to Channel NewsAsia that 744 Toyota Prius cars in Singapore were affected by the latest recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is reviewing complaints and other information provided by the public, and has been consulting with Toyota before Friday's recall.

The cars involved in the new recall were also involved in previous recalls in 2014 and 2015, but "the remedy conducted then did not anticipate the new condition identified in this recall".
