Bryce Harper Turned Down $300 Million Contract From Nationals

Unsurprisingly, free agent Bryce Harper was a popular topic. The biggest free-agent deal in pro sports history by total value had been Alex Rodriguez's 10-year deal worth $275 million with the New York Yankees in 2007. Harper will soon finally be available to sign with other teams after years of speculation about the Washington Nationals star's future.

However, his quick rejection of the deal doesn't exactly inspire hope he'll be returning to Washington.

Jim Salisbury of NBCSP says "the general consensus at the general managers meetings is that the Phillies will win the Bryce Harper sweepstakes". Hence why so many players have taken so long to sign contracts in recent years. The Nationals made him a qualifying offer last Friday.

Indeed, the Nationals need starting pitching, a catcher and to upgrade their bench. If LA does decide to make a run at Harper, they would likely still look to move Puig this offseason. It will cost them roughly $US13 million.

"He's shown the type of player he is and now he's a grizzled veteran", Rizzo said. "There is a reality that we would love to sign him, but we may not".

Whether the Nationals will be without Harper remains to be seen.

That Nationals offer may be off the table in its current form, but Boras rarely lets a high-spending team drop out of the race for a high-priced client. It turns out that he rejected a contract offer from the team that very day.

It's hard to find an executive, scout, or rival agent who doesn't believe that Harper will eventually sign with the Phillies, maybe a month from now when he can drive from his Las Vegas home to Mandalay Bay and make the official announcement himself.

Zack Greinke ($US34 million), David Price ($US31 million) and Clayton Kershaw ($US31 million) all got more. Max Scherzer got exactly $30 million.
