What that means is other devices will not be able to flick between Spring and T-Mobile, something that Google Fi is well known for.

Google Fi has always been a tempting deal for cell service, with the big caveat that it works only on Google-sold phones.

Now, the service will be officially supported on just about any mainstream Android phone or iPhone from the last couple years. Along with the name change, Google has announced that the wireless provider now supports "the majority of Android devices, " including Samsung and OnePlus handsets, and iPhones. Both new and existing Google Fi customers can take advantage of this deal.

That was not brilliant in the first half, we could have changed the rhythm and we had to change it much more often. Controlling it, staying in that mood, being positive in a situation, that's new for us and I like it a lot.

The service throttles the data speed after 15GB is used. When Wi-Fi is unavailable does it fall back to cellular connectivity for voice and data, utilizing multiple networks from different cellular carriers. Essentially, an MVNO ties up with a telecom operator to acquire bulk access to the network and offers services at its own rates to their subscribers.

Third, Google only charges you for the data you use each month - you pay $20 per month for unlimited talk and text, and then $10 per gigabyte of data. Those phones can automatically switch between T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular networks depending on which has the best signal, whereas The Verge reports that other phones appear to be sticking with T-Mobile only.

To celebrate the rebranding of Google Fi, Google Store has kicked off a pretty big promotion that could get you up to $999 in travel gift cards as long as you buy a Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL and sign-up for Google Fi service. Then you'll need a phone that's officially created to support Fi.
