HTC Unveils Vive Pro Eye with integrated eye-tracking at CES 2019

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT this year's CES might be VR-free, HTC goes and unveils its new "Vive Cosmos" virtual reality headset. The newest feature is the use of foveated rendering to give you a better visual quality inside of your VR headset.

It will do this by rendering your images to where you're actually looking as opposed to the standard way headsets work. To this end, the HTC Vive Pro Eye will be primarily focused on enterprise customers rather than the general videogame buying public, and will likely have a suitable price tag to match when it arrives in Q2 2019. An additional benefit is that the Vive Pro Eye can use your eyes as a sort of controller for menus and other experiences. HTC's primary hook has been Viveport's subscription's service, which allows you to pay $9 a month to play five games of your choosing. We didn't get many details during the show, but it sounds as if the Cosmos will be able to hook up to your PC for a high-fidelity experience, or be detached for a more mobile use-case.

"We found that over 85 per cent of VR intenders believe that ease of use and set up is the most important factor to consider while purchasing a headset", Daniel O'Brien, GM of HTC Vive swooned.

As for motion controllers, gone are the traditional Vive wands, and in are some newly-designed pieces that resemble something a lot closer to Oculus Touch, complete with tracking ring and joystick.

This teaser video is brief, and HTC hasn't put out that many more details, but the Vive Cosmos seems to be a much more streamlined VR headset.

Through the collaboration, Firefox Reality will be pre-installed as the default browser on HTC Vive devices. The device itself is relatively similar to the Vive Pro, HTC's professional high-end tethered fare, but there's one key new feature that could make all the difference to how we interact with, and even render, VR worlds.
