Awake this winter; Sleeping Giant Ski Area
Located just outside of the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, the Sleeping Giant Ski Area is scheduled to re-open by the Thanksgiving holiday. The 180-acre downhill ski area – closed since 2004 – is owned and operated by the non-profit Yellowstone Recreations Foundation.
With the addition of downhill skiing, Buffalo Bill’s Cody/Yellowstone Country – comprised of Cody, Powell, Meeteetse and Eastern Yellowstone National Park – now has truly comprehensive winter-season offerings. Winter travel enthusiasts can also enjoy ice-climbing, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, snowcoaching, winter wildlife-watching, museums and galleries, wintertime concerts and winter-season fishing.
“Winter was once considered the quiet season in Cody, but in the past few years we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of visitors who travel here to participate in their winter activity of choice,” said Claudia Wade, executive director of the Park County Travel Council. “The stores along Sheridan Avenue – our main street – are already stocking crampons, thermal socks and ski goggles, and our hotels report they are already taking reservations for the upcoming season. And when our visitors are ready to move indoors they will find a wide range of museums, galleries, restaurants and entertainment options.”

All Saints in Big Sky
For many, October 31st brings to mind images of jack-o-lanterns, children wearing costumes, and bags overflowing with candy. But All Hallow’s Eve, more commonly known as Halloween, is not the only significant event celebrated on that day. On October 31, 1517, a 33-year-old Augustinian monk, parish priest and professor of theology nailed “95 Theses” to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, opposing the sale of indulgences to finance the restoration of St. Peter’s Basilica. That monk, Martin Luther, gave birth to the Protestant Reformation by this act. Many Protestant Christians all over the world have commemorated that date, October 31st, ever since as “Reformation Day.” While the historical date for the observance of Reformation is October 31st, most churches, like All Saints in Big Sky, celebrate it on the last Sunday in October.
