Snomowbilers cited for encroaching wilderness area
The Gallatin National Forest has recently issued multiple citations to snowmobilers riding in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area on the Gardiner Ranger District. Motorized use is not allowed in congressionally-designated wilderness areas. The wilderness trespass occurred when snowmobilers drove beyond orange wilderness boundary signs. “We want folks to be able to go home at the end of a day of enjoying their national forest,” said Mary Maj (pronounced “may”), Gardiner District Ranger. “At the same time, they should honor the wilderness area boundary.” Snow rangers are out on the District and can offer information. Snowmobilers should be prepared for travel on the Forest, understand the day’s snow conditions, and bring proper equipment. The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center provides daily updates. Conditions can be checked by calling (406) 587-6981 or by visiting the Center’s website at www.mtavalanche.com. Everyone should also have a copy of the Forest over-snow travel map with them to identify areas open to motorized use. Maps are available free at locations throughout Cooke City, at all Forest Service offices, and on the Gallatin’s website at www.fs.fed.us/r1/gallatin/. Increased patrols are planned to help curb illegal snowmobile use in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area. Patrollers will also be educating snowmobilers on avalanche danger. For more information, please contact the Gardiner Ranger District at (406) 848-7375. Illegal activity can be reported to the Ranger District or by contacting TIP MONT either by phone at 1-800-TIPMONT or through their website at fwp.mt.gov/enforcement/tipmont.
